This summer I spent a few days in Miami with my family for the first time. Absolutely loved the city. Every morning very early I’d go out for a walk with my camera. Here are a few pictures I shot along Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. This is part of the Art Deco District and is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world.
All these hotels along Collins Ave serve as venues for weddings and I saw a bunch of them while driving by at night, it would be great to shoot weddings in Miami so if you know someone getting married in The Sunshine State send them my way
I have to thank my buddy Robert Lino for being such a great host!

Este verano pasé unos días en Miami con mi familia por primera vez. Me encantó la ciudad. Cada mañana muy temprano me iba a dar un paseo con mi cámara. Aquí están algunas fotos quehice a lo largo de la avenida Collins en Miami Beach. Esto es parte del distrito Art Deco y es la mayor colección de arquitectura Art Deco en el mundo.
Todos estos hoteles a lo largo de Collins Avenue sirven como sede para bodas y vi muchas de ellas mientras pasábamos manejando por enfrente en horas de la noche. Sería genial poder fotografiar una boda en Miami así que si conoces a alguien que esté por casarse en el Sunshine State ya sabes a quien recomendarles

It must be a great feeling to see people willing to buy one of our prints to hang on their wall. Of course this happens with my clients when they buy prints from their wedding but in this case I’m talking about images that don’t have a direct connection with the buyer.
I would love to be able to provoke that with my non-wedding-related images but today I was on the opposite end of the equation and I was the one buying my first original signed limited edition print by the photographer, Steve McCurry.

Debe ser una gran sensación ver a la gente dispuesta a comprar una de nuestras fotografías para colgar en su pared. Por supuesto que esto ocurre con mis clientes cuando compran fotografías de su boda, pero en este caso estoy hablando de imágenes que no tienen una conexión directa con el comprador.

Steve McCurry is the recipient of the 2011 Leica Hall of Fame award.

The prize is awarded to photographers who have rendered outstanding service to the Leica brand and to the genre of photography.

For more than three decades, 61-year-old McCurry has been on the road as a documentary photographer at the world’s trouble spots and has obtained many awards for his work. Since 1986, Steve McCurry has been a member of Magnum Photos, the renowned photographic agency.

The Leica announcement coincided with the opening of Steve’s exhibition -The Iconic Photographs- at the Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica. Today I took the trip to see the real thing. I call the ‘real thing’ to the prints. It’s very easy to make images look great on a computer screen but prints don’t lie.

It must be a great feeling to see people willing to buy one of our prints to hang on their wall. Of course this happens with my clients when they buy prints from their wedding but in Steve’s case I’m talking about images that don’t have a direct connection with the buyer, since they are in most cases street photos.

Steve McCurry ha recibido el premio del Hall de la Fama Leica 2011.

El premio se concede a los fotógrafos que han prestado servicios destacados a la marca Leica y el género de la fotografía.

Durante más de tres décadas McCurry, de 61 años de edad, ha estado viajando como fotógrafo documental en zonas conflictivas del mundo y ha obtenido numerosos premios por su trabajo. Desde 1986, Steve McCurry ha sido un miembro de Magnum Photos, la agencia fotográfica de renombre.

El anuncio de Leica coincidió con la apertura de la exposición de Steve titulada -Las Fotografías Icónicas- que tiene lugar en la Galería Peter Fetterman en Santa Mónica. Hoy hice el viaje para ver de cerca las impresiones que son la neta. Es muy fácil hacer que las imágenes se vean muy bien en la pantalla de un ordenador pero las impresiones no mienten.

Debe ser una gran sensación ver a la gente dispuesta a comprar una de nuestras fotografías para colgar en su pared. Por supuesto que esto ocurre con mis clientes cuando compran fotografías de su boda, pero en el caso de Steve estoy hablando de imágenes que no tienen una conexión directa con el comprador, ya que son en la mayoría de los casos fotos callejeras.

When our train arrived in Lào Cai station we were still sleeping. Marcos, my travel buddy, woke up when he heard noises and noticed that the train wasn’t moving. He had to wake me up and that was a sign that fatigue was kicking in. We’d been traveling all night in a private cabin with two beds. Outside the station our local guide and driver were waiting for us. They told us that we were one of the last people to exit the train so we’d been sleeping probably for half an hour after the train got to the station… good thing Lào Cai was the last stop.

The sun was starting to rise and we had another day of intense activity. This time a 13-mile hike… killer but awesome!

Al llegar el tren a la estación de Lào Cai todavía estábamos dormidos. Marcos, mi compañero de viaje, se despertó al escuchar ruídos cuando el tren ya estaba inmóvil en la estación. Tuvo que despertarme a mi, señal de que el cansancio era mucho. Habíamos viajado toda la noche en una cabina privada con dos camas. Afuera de la estación nos esperaba nuestra guía y un chofer. Según ellos fuimos de los últimos en salir del tren así que por lo visto estuvimos durmiendo casi media hora luego de haber arribado este a la estación… menos mal que Lào Cai era la última parada.

Comenzaba a amanecer y nos esperaba otro arduo día de recorrida. Esta vez 20 km de trekking… matador pero espectacular!

ENGLISH
The day starts very early in India, if it ever ends. The sun was already rising at 5:45AM when we woke up. The temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit that early in the morning was letting us know that it would be another scorching day.
The hotel started serving breakfast at 6:30AM so we had to skip it. Solomon, our local driver, was waiting in the lobby ready to take us to the stunning Taj Mahal.

We entered the complex through the West Gate where you have to walk 10 minutes to the main entrance. On either side of this road there are parks and gardens which to our surprise were full of people just minutes after 6AM. Children running, men playing badminton, people screaming and laughing out loud. With no sense of time and space one could swear that this scene was that of a children’s park in Madrid or Buenos Aires on a Sunday afternoon.

The day you see the Taj Mahal with your own eyes for the first time becomes an unforgettable day. Here are some pictures of that unforgettable day in my life in the city of Agra, India.

PS: This was a very productive day. As you can see in the photos we had time to visit other landmarks in Agra but we’ll save those for the book;)

El día en la India comienza muy temprano, si es que alguna vez termina. Aunque nos levantamos a las 5:45AM, el sol ya asomaba. La temperatura de 30 grados centígrados a tan temprana hora nos dejaba saber que sería otro día de calor fatal.
El desayuno en nuestro hotel comenzaba a servirse a las 6:30AM así que tuvimos que saltearlo. Salomón, nuestro chofer local, nos estaba esperando en el lobby listo para llevarnos al impresionante Taj Mahal.

Ingresamos al complejo por la puerta Oeste desde donde hay que caminar unos 10 minutos hasta la entrada principal. A los lados de este camino hay parques y jardines que para nuestra sorpresa estaban colmados de gente a solo minutos pasadas las 6 de la mañana. Niños corriendo, adultos jugando badminton, griterío, risas. Si uno no tuviera noción del tiempo y el espacio podría jurar que esta escena era la de un parque de niños en Madrid o Buenos Aires un Domingo a las 3 de la tarde.

El día que uno ve el Taj Mahal con sus propios ojos por primera vez se convierte sin duda en un día inolvidable. Las siguientes son algunas de las fotografías de aquel día inolvidable en mi vida en la ciudad de Agra, India.

PS: este fue un día muy productivo y como ven en las fotos pudimos ver muchas más cosas en Agra que nos guardaremos para el libro

Earlier this year I had the chance to fulfill one of the goals that I think most people have at some point in their lives, until the reality of everyday life slowly takes care of making us postpone it until it becomes just one more item in our bucket list. That goal is to make a trip around the world.

“There’s nothing worst than to yearn for something that never happened”, says a famous Spanish singer. Taking his always wise words into consideration and pondering the fact that I’m almost hitting 40 it would have been stupid not to accept the offer that my buddy Marcos was presenting to me so vividly over Skype. This is a trip that Marcos always had in mind but he was missing one thing, a wingman. Truth is he didn’t have much resistance while trying to convince me.

On May 4 we both departed from Madrid-Barajas airport to go to Tel-Aviv in Israel to officialy start this adventure.

The following photo gallery is a recopilation of images shot during the morning hours of the last day of our trip in the beautiful city of Cusco in Perú. Enjoy!

Este año cumplí una de las metas que creo la mayoría de las personas en algún que otro momento tenemos, hasta que la realidad de la vida cotidiana se encarga de poco a poco ir borrándola hasta convertirla simplemente en una añoranza. Dicha meta es dar la vuelta al mundo.

“No hay nostalgia peor que añorar lo que nunca jamás sucedió”, dice Joaquín. Teniendo en cuenta las siempre sabias palabras del trovador Español y ya pisando los 40 pirulos (años en Argentino) hubiera sido una tontería no aceptar la propuesta que mi amigo Marcos me estaba pintando tan descriptivamente a través de Skype. Este viaje es uno que el siempre había querido hacer pero le faltaba algo, un compañero de viaje. La verdad no tuvo mucha resistencia tratando de convencer a un servidor.

El 4 de Mayo ambos partimos desde el aeropuerto de Barajas en Madrid para dirigirnos a Tel-Aviv en Israel dando comienzo oficial a esta aventura.

La siguiente es una recopilación de fotografías capturadas el último día de nuestra travesía en horas de la mañana antes de abandonar la hermosa ciudad de Cuzco en Perú.

Last Sunday I had the big responsability of opening the Annual National Convention of the Mexican Society of Professional Photographers (SMFP) in Monterrey. I ALWAYS feel a little nervous during the first minutes of my speaking engagements until I warm up but these guys made me feel so at home that this time I started at full swing only to stop two and a half hours later.

After spending so much time with colleagues around the world I realized that many photographers focus too much on the art of photography and don’t invest enough time preparing to ‘sell’ themselves. This time I spoke about sales techniques some of which I acquired while selling pots and pans when I first came to the US and now I apply in my photography business. I also discussed the structure of my sales presentation to potential clients and I hope the information I shared was useful specially for those who have a little trouble in this area so important for our success.

El Domingo pasado tuve la gran responsabilidad de ser el ponente que abriera la Convención Nacional Anual de la Sociedad Mexicana de Fotógrafos Profesionales en Monterrey. SIEMPRE durante mis conferencias me pongo un poco nervioso los primeros minutos de la misma hasta que entro en calor pero esta vez la gente me hizo sentir tan a gusto que comencé con los motores en caliente y no paré hasta pasarme de las dos horas y media que duraba mi programa.

Me he dado cuenta luego de tratar con infinidad de colegas que muchos fotógrafos se enfocan demasiado en el arte de la fotografía pero no invierten mucho tiempo en prepararse para ‘venderse’. En esta oportunidad hablé bastante acerca de técnicas de ventas algunas de las cuales adquirí mientras vendía ollas y sartenes cuando recién llegué a los Estados Unidos y que ahora aplico en mi negocio de fotografía. La estructura de mi presentación frente a potenciales clientes también fue discutida con ejemplos que espero hayan sido útiles especialmente a aquellos que flaquean en este tema.

Desafortunadamente tuve que retirarme el segundo día de la convención por compromisos de viaje pero me hubiera gustado quedarme hasta el final. Aprovecho para agradecer a los integrantes de la Sociedad Mexicana de Fotógrafos Profesionales (SMFP) y a las casi 300 personas asistentes a mi charla por su tiempo. Nos vemos en la próxima!

On the occasion of the 1st International Convention organized by Foro de Fotógrafos held in Madrid last November we were lucky to have the presence of one of the most renowned wedding photographers in the industry, Ghionis Jerry.

A couple of weeks before the event Jerry contacted me to ask for help with the production of a conceptual photoshoot that he wanted to do during his stay in Spain. The idea: a bullfighter and a model in a bullring.

Hundreds of details later the photoshoot took place a day before the convention and here are the results according to what Jerry published on his own blog.

NOTE: this photoshoot will be featured in a future episode of The Ice Society

A pedido de los lectores hispano-parlantes a partir de hoy voy a comenzar a publicar el contenido del blog también en Español…

Con motivo de la 1er Convención Internacional del Foro de Fotógrafos que tuvo lugar en Madrid el pasado mes de Noviembre tuvimos la suerte de contar con la presencia de uno de los fotógrafos de bodas más reconocidos de la industria, el australiano Jerry Ghionis.

Un par de semanas antes del evento Jerry me contactó para pedirme ayuda con la producción de una sesión de fotos conceptual que tenía ganas de hacer durante su estadía en España. La idea: un torero y una modelo en una plaza de toros.

Cientos de detalles después la sesión tuvo lugar un día antes de comenzar la convención y aquí estan los resultados según Jerry publicara en su propio blog.

NOTA: esta sesión de fotos será parte de un futuro episodio de The Ice Society
